Ex-Votos sind in vielen Kulturen verbreitete Opfergaben, die Schutz- und Erlösungswünsche ausdrücken. Der Titel zitiert Marx’ «... Religion ist das Opium des Volkes ...» und zieht Parallelen zwischen religiösen Heilsversprechen und kapitalistischen Idealen – ähnlich wie Walter Benjamin, der den Kapitalismus als gnadenlosen Kult «sans trêve et sans merci» beschrieb. Die Arbeiten adaptieren die Form traditioneller Ex-Votos, ersetzen deren Motive jedoch durch Ikonen der Pop-, Konsum- und Digitalkultur. Statt geheilter Körper zeigen sie Idealbilder von Körperkult und Selbstoptimierung. Hände halten Smartphones als Kultobjekte, Emojis und Like-Symbole prägen die Ikonografie. Ergänzt durch neoliberale Mantras wie «Me First» oder «Buy Now Pay Later» spiegelt die Serie eine Gegenwart, in der die Individualisierung überhöht, kollektive Verantwortung geschwächt und Technologie zugleich Orientierung verspricht und neue Abhängigkeiten schafft.

Ex-Votos are offerings found in many cultures, expressing wishes for protection or help. The title quotes Karl Marx’s famous phrase, «...Religion is the opium of the people...», drawing a parallel between religious promises of salvation and capitalist ideals. Walter Benjamin also described capitalism as a modern religion – a cult «sans trêve et sans merci», that is, without pause and without mercy. Adopting the form of traditional ex-votos, the pieces replace their motifs with icons of pop, consumer, and digital culture. Instead of healed bodies, they depict ideals of body cult and self-optimization: hands holding smartphones as cult objects, emojis and like-symbols defining the iconography. Accompanied by neoliberal mantras like «Me First» or «Buy Now Pay Later», the series reflects a present where the individual is glorified and collective responsibility weakened – a world where technology promises guidance while fostering new dependencies.
